Interestingly, work-at-home-mom was not one of the titles I ever thought I’d have. I remember driving to work while I was pregnant, passing by daycare centers where suit-wearing dads and moms were dropping off their kids and thinking “soon that will be me.” We researched our daycare options endlessly before Chloe was born and I spent the early part of my maternity leave trying to work out the details of returning to work in an office.
Then the time came to face the reality of leaving my precious little girl in the care of someone else… and missing out on all the amazing moments I get to have with her. To my surprise, the thought of it just gave me chills. Then bam, all of a sudden I was a WAHM! While navigating the the trials of new-mommyhood alongside being a new business owner has been challenging to say the least, I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Not one day is ever easy; it’s a constant juggling act – but what mom’s life isn’t? Sure, sometimes I get a little envious of anyone who gets to spend eight straight hours truly concentrating on their work, no interruptions. But I’ll bet they’re jealous of me when I get to exercise the perks of being a WAHM (midday trips to the park, working all day in my jammies if I so choose, need I go on?!).
I can honestly say I’m happier in this phase of life than I’ve ever been – even if it’s not what the former me would have pictured at all.

As cliché as it sounds, my son, Tavin, has changed me in ways I never thought possible. Believe it or not, I used to be completely career centered with my eye on the climbing the corporate ladder. My perspective has totally changed since my little man came into my life and I’ve come to a realization that I’d rather walk around with a diaper bag than one of my fabulous purses because it means I’m spending time with my family. There will be time for those purses (and my heals) later.
As a WAHM, I still have an enormous passion for my work, but now I do it on my schedule… which most of the time means after everyone is asleep for the night. Of course there are meetings and deadlines, so my dear mother-in-law watches Tavin for part of the week. I feel so lucky to be doing what I’m doing and having the flexibility of now owning my own business(es) to make it work for everyone… although sometimes I feel like I’m working overtime to make dinner… and ends meat.

I have been working at home in the PR business for more than three years now. I enjoy the flexibility and freedom of working for myself and can’t imagine ever going back to a “regular office job” again. I had many fears of how I would juggle work and baby, and now I am finding that no matter how much advice you get from other WAHMs, you figure out what works best for you as you go along. I will admit that my “maternity break” wasn’t void of work. I still checked my emails and took calls and sent out pitches when the baby was napping. I even admit to having my Blackberry in one hand and my baby in my other arm as I breastfed him.
I grew up with my parents owning their own business (a tree nursery and landscaping business) and my mom would be considered a “WAHM” since the business was just outside our house. We did go to sitters during the summer so she could take care of customers, but there was always a hot meal on the table for us at the end of the day. How she did it and how I hope to do it, I am still trying to figure out.
